How To Remove Hard Water Stains | Cleaning Hard Water Stains

Hard water stains are the result of calcium and magnesium salts dissolved in water precipitating by reacting with metals or soaps to form insoluble build ups or scale. These scale or grime build ups can dissolve in weak acids normally.

Cleaning hard water stains with weak acids at home

The weak acid most people are familiar with and the one most readily available in the home is vinegar.

So to remove hard water stains on glassware, metals, crockery and the like just apply some vinegar (or lemon juice will have same effect and smells nicer) to the hard water stain marks.

Cream of tarter will improve the taste of your coffee if you use this to remove hard water stains and scale inside your coffee maker.

Whilst hard water does not stain clothes it makes washing them harder especially if soap instead of detergent is used.  Clothes washed in hard water need more thorough rinsing

How the softener works and how to install a water softener

How water softeners work is simple, water flows through zeolite or past the beads - these filters are saturated with sodium ions and when either calcium or magnesium ions come along they swap places with the sodium ion. So in the end magnesium and calcium ions remain on the bead or in the zeolite matrix while sodium ions get injected into the water.

Eventually all that remains inside the zeolite matrix and on the beads are calcium or magnesium ions at which point the filter either can be replaced of regenerated. information from www.wikipedia.com

Water softener powders can be bought to make hard water soft. You must add the water softener powder to the water before any soap.

In washing machines it is good idea to add water softener powder into rinse water as well.
